“The Holy Spirit is the living water ‘welling up to eternal life’ in the heart that prays. It is he who teaches us to accept it at its source: Christ” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2652). Christ gives Himself to us in all of the sacraments, but the Eucharist is the “Sacrament of sacraments” (CCC, 1330). “Sacraments are ‘powers that come forth’ from the Body of Christ, which is ever-living and life-giving. They are actions of the Holy Spirit at work in his Body, the Church. They are ‘the masterworks of God’ in the new and everlasting covenant” (CCC,1116).
Some Catholics have the habit of offering this prayer before Mass starts. A disciple of Jesus Christ by baptism should prepare spiritually to worship the Heavenly Father through His Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, in the Holy Spirit at the beginning of every Sacred Liturgy. When one prepares spiritually before Mass starts, it is a common practice to begin one’s private prayer by offering spontaneously from the heart a prayer of praise and thanksgiving to participate in this Sacred Liturgy. Then, one offers one’s intention for this Mass, for example, for the well-being of family members. Then, one should pray this Prayer to the Holy Spirit because it gives one the spiritual disposition to be guided by the Holy Spirit in true worship.
