Dated January 5, 2005.
This prayer is dedicated to Pope St. John Paul II because his writings inspired it, it was chanted for him at the General Audience of January 5, 2005, and he was presented with it in booklet form in 24 languages translated by native speakers, just three months before he returned to the Father’s house.
At times, his writings are very complex. At other times, he preached very simply and boldly. This prayer, which reveals the influences of Classical Philosophy, Sacred Scripture, St. Augustine, and St. Thomas Aquinas, puts together for the first time some of Pope St. John Paul the Great’s most memorable phrases. The third stanza is uniquely Wojtylan, drawing from Lublin Thomism and the Encyclical Veritatis Splendor, as well as from the Apostolic Letter Dies Domini, the Encyclical Letter Evangelium Vitae, the Letter to Families, and the Encyclical Letter Sollicitudo Rei Socialis.
Some Catholics have the habit of offering this prayer in place of the Creed at the beginning of the Marian Rosary because Pope John Paul the Great recognized various ways to open and close the rosary (Apostolic Letter Rosarium Virginis Mariae, 37).
